Teaching

We are committed to more sustainability in teaching at the University of Stuttgart. Our efforts promote environmentally conscious teaching methods and integrate innovative approaches into education. We focus on raising awareness for sustainable issues to give students a deeper understanding of environmental challenges. We rely on an integrative approach that focuses on the content of the courses and how knowledge is imparted. You will find more about how we are shaping the teaching landscape at the University of Stuttgart through our initiative and offering students the opportunity to engage with ecological issues actively.

Interdisciplinary Key Qualifications

SciWalK (6 ECTS, Winter- and Summersemester)

Do you want to help shape cities for the future? In the master's module “SciWalK,” we develop interdisciplinary solutions for climate-resilient cities.

  • Hands-on learning in a real-world laboratory
  • Interdisciplinary teamwork (architecture, urban planning, civil engineering, environmental engineering, computer science, electrical engineering)
  • Development and construction of portable microclimate measurement trackers
  • Digital data collection, evaluation, and visualization
  • Urban building physics measurements in urban spaces
  • Development of your own research question + measurement concept
  • Design of architectural and urban planning adaptation measures
  • Presentation of results in interactive Science Walk

BWIdee (3 ECTS, Winter-/Summersemester)

Want to learn about sustainability in a hands-on approach and pitch your own idea? Then sign up for BWIdee in the winter semester 25/26!
In 12 online sessions, Wednesdays from 16:00 to 17:30, you will learn from experts in:

  • Bioeconomics
  • Life Sciences
  • Resource Efficiency
  • Digitalization
  • Impulses for Design Thinking
  • Entrepreneurship & Communication.

Participation is completely online via Zoom; you choose the most exciting ones for you from four parallel calls.

In the second part of the module, you will work with students from all over Baden-Württemberg to develop your own sustainable innovations. With the support of experienced mentors and financial resources, you will pitch your development at the big Demo Day at the end of the semester. The best ideas will be awarded attractive prizes – this is your chance to make a lasting sustainable impact! BWIdee is open to all students in Baden-Württemberg and is funded by the Ministry for the Environment, Climate and Energy Sector.

Act Green (3 ECTS, summer semester)

Do you have a brilliant idea that could make the campus more sustainable? But you don't know how to implement it? Or you have a lot of energy and drive and would like to implement a sustainable project at the university, but you are still missing the perfect idea? Then Act Green is just the right thing for you! The Green Office will help you become a change agent for sustainable change. And on top of that, you will earn 3 ECTS for your commitment! Just get in touch with us!

Nachhaltigkeit zwischen Wissenschaft und Alltag / Sustainability between science and everyday life (3 ECTS, winter semester)

The interdisciplinary key qualification “Sustainability between science and everyday life” (3 ECTS) deals with the critical examination of various areas of sustainability. In several sessions, the module deals with the sustainability- relevant topics of climate change, nutrition, digitalization, lifestyle, social justice, mobility and the responsibility of universities, which are presented by speakers and discussed with the participants. The focus here is on reflecting on one's own actions and the discourse in the group.

This course is held in German.

Design Factory (DF): Design Thinking – Innovation Process in Practice

In the interdisciplinary key qualification (3ECTS) of the Design Factory Stuttgart, you will work in interdisciplinary teams to develop solution concepts for issues relating to the ESG topics of the ARENA2036 partners. You will follow the design thinking approach and be supported by coaches to develop your innovation potential. You will get to know the companies and their topics, put yourself in the shoes of various stakeholders and scrutinize their perspectives. You will visualize your point of view and redefine solution approaches in a prototype, which you will be allowed to exhibit and present at the semester closing gala in the ARENA2036. The course is run by the Design Factory Stuttgart in cooperation with the ENI and IAT. Registration via Campus.
