BICYCLE

You probably already knew that active mobility modes (e.g., walking and biking) have the lowest environmental impact and cost. On the path to a carbon-neutral university by 2035, this is the optimal mode of transportation. So let's get back in the saddle together. Here you will find some information that will make cycling in Stuttgart easier for you.

WHAT HAPPENED SO FAR

Free cargo bike for everyone

A group of students from the "Bauhäusle" dormitory dreams of fewer cars on campus. With the project FLASA - Free Cargo Bike for All (Freies Lastenrad für Alle), they want to make the campus more sustainable by promoting cycling. For this purpose, they make their self-built cargo bike trailer available through Lastenrad Stuttgart e.V.. Lastenrad Stuttgart e.V. is an association that offers cargo bikes for free (donation-based) rent in Stuttgart. In addition, electrified cargo bikes are purchased from the sponsorship to make them available for loan as well.

Bicycle repair columns

In the STADTRADELN campaign, the university pedaled hard and won a bicycle repair column. The RadKULTUR initiative and the STADTRADELN campaign rewarded the hard-working commitment of employees and students with the special prize for the most cyclists in the race. The prize is a RadService Point in the form of a bicycle repair column that will be installed on the Stadtmitte campus.

Contributions to Stuttgart Mobility Week 2021

At the Stuttgart Mobility Week 2021 the Green Office campaigned for more sustainable mobility in Stuttgart. The offer included an e-scooter tour of architectural highlights on the Vaihingen campus, a bicycle repair workshop and an online discussion on the topic of "active mobility". The events were intended to promote a conscious approach to all forms of mobility.

Expansion of the bicycle workshop

At the bicycle workshop of the AK Fahrradwerkstatt of stuvus, students and employees can be hands-on and make old bicycles roadworthy again. To do so, the bicycle repair shop provides free tools and knowledge for your own bicycle repair on site. It is currently located on the Vaihingen campus at the Light Blue Hippo (Pfaffenwaldring 57, first floor). Together with the Green Office, the bicycle repair shop started the project "Rad und Tat" in January 2022 and received UNA TERRA funding for it. As a result, the bicycle repair shop was expanded to include more tools and equipment. In addition, bicycle repair stations were purchased by RadKULTUR, which allow students and employees to make small repairs to their bicycles free of charge around the clock. This means that they are not dependent on the help of a bicycle mechanic or the opening hours of the bicycle repair shop. The installation of the bicycle columns on campus will follow. Other campaigns within the scope of the funded project were bicycle repair events and excursions.

Bicycle repair event

As part of the second Stuttgart Mobility Week, the Green Office, together with GREENESTO and the bicycle repair shop, launched a bicycle repair campaign on the campus Stadtmitte on September 16-20, 2022, giving visitors the opportunity to have their bicycles checked free of charge and, if necessary, have any minor damage or defects repaired. The event aimed at expanding sustainable mobility on campus and increased the visibility of the stuvus bicycle repair shop.

WHY BICYCLE

  • Climate and environmental protection
  • Incentive for sport and health
  • No searching for a parking space or getting a ticket for parking violations
  • No need to buy a parking ticket
  • No speed cameras
  • Drive to the entrance - saves the walk from the car to the destination
  • Lower fixed costs, than with a car
  • In case of "bad" weather, the public transport comes to the rescue (bicycle transport in public transport is free of charge outside of rush hours in BW)
  • E-bikes help for long distances
  • Increased cycling increases pressure to expand bicycle infrastructure
  • Cargo bikes enable the transport of larger goods or children
