The Institute for Sanitary Engineering, Water Quality and Solid Waste Management is the project coordinator and thus the head of SUCCESS 24. The institute was founded in 1975 and has since worked on the three areas of sanitary engineering and water recycling, waste management and emissions, as well as hydrochemistry and hydrobiology always keeping focus on interdisciplinarity.

In the past years, the institute has already been in touch with waste management projects in the sub-Saharan region, for example during the Income Generation and Climate Protection through the Sustainable Valorization of Municipal Solid Wastes in Emerging Megacities (IGNIS). Through teaching experience in the field of waste management and regular supervision of master's or Ph.D. theses, the institute contributes greatly to the academic part of the project (Module 2).

The Institute of Acoustics and Building Physics addresses the current sustainability challenges in our built environment.

Since 1989, the department of Life Cycle Engineering (GaBi) has been dedicated to the field of sustainability. The research area of the department includes ecological, socio-economic as well as technical analysis and optimization at different study levels, ranging from processes to products. The sustainability studies at the institute connect natural and built environments with each other: from energy provision, material production, recovery and recycling of high-quality material flows to mobility and construction. Through the application of life cycle thinking, the department actively supports present and future sustainable solutions.

Research work covers a wide range of topics such as

  • Novel mobility concepts
  • Renewable energy supply and energy storage
  • Bio-based materials
  • Functionally integrated materials and components
  • Circular economy
  • Resource efficiency lightweight construction
  • Land use
  • Biodiversity

Moreover, the IABP has participated in international projects and developed methods for SDG-based Life Cycle Sustainability Assessments (LCSA), which can be transferred to Module 1. The IABP will also participate in the academic cooperation (Module 2), with the "Life Cycle Assessment and Sustainability" online lecture, applying its online-teaching experience, gained over the years.

During the SuCCESS24 project, the IABP focuses on the material flow analysis (MFA) of the Addis Ababa – Adama Corridor, and the development of a Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) method to be implemented in the municipal waste management of sub-Saharan Africa, based on the UN SDGs. The project results are compiled in a practical tool kit, developed with the Ethiopian partners for local application.

Addis Ababa institute of Technology

The Addis Ababa Institute of Technology was established about 60 years ago and is the leading Institute of Technology in Ethiopia.

The AAiT has a well-established environmental program with links to solid waste management, waste water treatment, transportation efficiency, policy frameworks and waste treatment technologies which will be beneficial knowledge for the project, especially for Module 2.

The Institute has a central role in the SuCCESS24 project, as the research project, takes place in the corridor from Addis Ababa to Adama, and thus dissertations can be supervised directly on site within the framework of the project, so that difficulties in investigations can be dealt with directly and practically.

The University of Ghana is represented by the Department of Geography and Resource Development from the School of Social Sciences.

Established in 1948, the Department has been providing leadership and academic excellence in Geography and Resource Development via lecutres, rigorous scientific research and extension activities.

Climatology, Geomorphology, Cartography, Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems (RS/GIS), Rural Resources Development, Urban Studies, Regional Development, are among others, examples of lecutres offered to students.

The participation of this department relies in the transferability of methods developed in Ethiopia to the facilities in Ghana, comprehending the last Work Package of Module 1 and most of Module 2.

The West Africa Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) is based in Ghana and represents a large-scale, research-based climate service centre that aims to help meet the challenge of improving human and environmental resilience to climate change and increased variability. It does so by strengthening research capacity and infrastructure in West Africa related to climate change and by pooling the expertise of ten West African countries and Germany. The organization has a partnership with 12 universities enabling the supervision of 10 doctoral programs as well as 2 master’s programs.

With experience in postgraduate education, and its own research projects on a wide range of topics related to climate change, WASCAL is an excellent partner for SuCCESS24 and will contribute greatly to achieve the goals of Module 2.

The AT-Association (Adapted Technologies) is an association of around 30 independent researchers, consultants, trainers, institutes, and consultancies that has been registered a registered non-profit organization in Germany since 1988. The term "Adapted Technology" not only includes primarily technical aspects but also combines technology and economics with aspects of ecology and sociology. The basic idea is to develop and implement solutions that consider local interests, opportunities, and resources within the scope of sustainable development.

Networking of experts from different disciplines through the AT-Association allows the emergence of teams capable of performing complex tasks.

The non-profit organization is actively involved in the development of concepts and strategies that also consider current global challenges such as climate change, resource scarcity and rapid urbanization.

Waste Collectors in Addis Ababa Supported by ENDA

Environmental Development Action-Ethiopia (ENDA-Ethiopia) is the Ethiopian branch of ENDA Third World (ENDA TM), based in Dakar, Senegal. This organzation has been working on urban development and environmental issues since th ebeginning of its operations in 1997.

The four focal points of ENDA-Ethiopia are waste management, renewable energies, urban environmental protection and management as well as biodiversity. Through every accomplished project, ENDA wants to promote economic growth, social well-being, environmental sustainability, and the combat of climate change issues. Furthermore, ENDA is a member of several networks like Horn of Africa Regional Environment Centre and Network (HoAREC) and Consortium for Climate Change – Ethiopia (CCC-E), actively participating in their commitments.

IENDA contributes with a lot of expertise to SuCCESS24, since it has already executed several projects in the field of solid waste management on its own.

With the Addis Ababa City Government, Solid Waste Management Agency, we have one of the most important operators in the sector of waste management in the Sub-Saharan region on board.
Practical implementation of an optimized waste management system will be enabled with the aid of the city government.

Our governmental partner in Ghana is the Department of Central Administration from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).
This department sees through policy formulation, planning and decision-making at the assembly.

As part of its responsibilities, the Department of Central Administration acts as a liaison between heads of other governmental and non-governmental agencies and the Metro Chief Executive (MCE). It manages the financial resources and other aspects of the assembly in consultation with the Metro Chief Executive (MCE).
