Micro-module

The new elective module, “Soft Condensed Matter,” provides insights into the fascinating world of soft matter and allows students to delve deeper into a subfield of their choice.

The module Soft Condensed Matter combines a compulsory foundational lecture with a selectable in-depth component in the form of a so-called micro-module. This new elective module (3 ECTS) is offered in the following degree programs:

  • M.Sc. Chemistry: Add-On Module / Compulsory Elective Module (Research Profile 2)
  • M.Sc. Chemical Sciences: Specialization module (Profile 2)
  • B.Sc. Physics: Compulsory Elective Module (Advanced Lecture Chemistry Depending on Offer)

In the foundational lecture Introduction to Soft Matter, you will first gain a broad overview in the field of Soft Matter. It introduces the most important forms of soft matter, their similairites, and their biological and technological relevance. In addition, it conveys fundamental physico-chemical concepts underlying the various systems and presents the key experimental methods used to study them.

Building on these fundamentals, you then choose one of the available areas of specialization according to your personal interests. In your chosen micro-module, you deepen your understanding of the respective topic and apply the concepts you have learned through hands-on lab experiments.

The following areas of specialization are currently available to choose from:

  • Foams,
  • Emulsions,
  • Liquid Crystals, and
  • (Artificial) Biomembranes.

Further micro-modules are currently in development and will expand the range of offerings in the future.
