„CHARM - Stauraummanagement: Prozesse im Kleinen - Auswirkungen im Großen“

On October 12th, the first CHARM-status colloquium titled „Prozesse im Kleinen – Auswirkungen im Großen“ took place in Freiburg. Three invited experts contributed to different aspects by keynote lectures. Subsequently, members of the CHARM-Team presented their work and initial research results.

In his contribution, Prof. Schüttrumpf (RWTH Aachen) emphasized the importance of sediments for river system morphology and the challenges posed by the accumulation of sediments in reservoirs. Sediments do not only affect the effectiveness of reservoirs worldwide, but also have far-reaching impacts on the entire river system from the source to the estuary.

In her lecture "Toxic cyanobacteria worldwide - from polar regions to garden ponds", Dr. Kleinteich was able to show, that cyanobacteria are not only part of completely different ecosystems, but also represent a global challenge for the management of reservoirs and consequently for water supply systems. Moreover, cyanobacteria can pose a serious risk to human health.

Sophie Kuppler discussed questions of governance in connection to reservoirs with respect to the social processes. She was able to show, that reservoirs can be seen as socio-technical systems that are part of a current process of social transformation. The question of how to deal with conflicting interests will be a particular challenge in the future.

Subsequent to the expert lectures, the CHARM-Team presented the current work as well as first results.
